Podcast 030: Jèan P and “Say What You Mean”

by EW

In today’s episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Jèan P. Jèan P is a Canton, Ohio based rapper and he recently released a new album called “Say What You Mean”. “Say What You Mean” is 14 tracks of honest and lyrical hip hop that like Jèan, doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. I highly recommend checking the album out on Spotify or wherever you listen to music, even if you’re not a fan of hip hop. It’s unlike most hip hop that’s played on the radio or in the mainstream, and as you’ll hear in this conversation, he has a true love for the culture and his artistry fully embodies his desire to be open about who he is as a person. Links to find the album to stream or to purchase are in the show notes for this episode. If you stick around until the end, Jèan also gave me the green light to include his song “JJ”, which has an accompanying music video on YouTube for anyone interested. Jèan is an old college friend from Ohio University so you’ll hear us talk about our experience in school here a little bit and we also riff on how his artistry has evolved since our college days up to now. For reference, his album “Still Dreaming” came out in 2012, the year I graduated. We start the podcast off talking about his new album “Say What You Mean” and the evolution of his creative process. We also discuss what it was like losing his parents at a young age and how he used the support system he had to grow into the person and artist he’s become. We spend time talking about his job as a mailman during coronavirus, social justice, the teaching capabilities of hip hop and other topics. Listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
